santos-silva.jpgAugusto Santos Silva was born in Porto on 20 August 1956.

He has been the President of the Assembleia da República since 29 March 2022.
He is married, the father of three children and the grandfather of five grandchildren. He obtained a PhD in Sociology from ISCTE — University Institute of Lisbon (1992).

He is a full professor at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto. He is the author of several works in the fields of sociology and political thinking. He served in the following governments: . 22nd Constitutional Government, as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (2019-2022); . 21st Constitutional Government, as Minister of Foreign Affairs (2015-2019); . 18th Constitutional Government, as Minister of National Defence (2009-2011); . 17th Constitutional Government, as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs (2005-2009); . 14th Constitutional Government, as Secretary of State for Educational Administration (1999-2000), Minister of Education (2000-2001) and Minister of Culture (2001-2002). He served as a Member of the Assembleia da República in the 9th and 12th legislatures (2002-2005; 2011). He served as pro-rector at the University of Porto (1998-1999). He is a member of the Socialist Party.
