Joel Diaz Rodriguez is a Lawyer graduated from Complutense University of Madrid and holds a master’s degree in international Relations from the Diplomatic School of Spain. His interest and passion for international law and global affairs led him to start an international career that has combined a professional path with continue academic trainings that have given him a rich perspective from both sides.

Upon graduating from Law school, he interned at the Embassy of Peru to the United States, in the political and legal department dealing with diplomatic law and international legal cooperation issues. Then, he worked at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington DC as a consultant at the Office of the Assistant Secretary General, where he conducted research and analysis related to the strengthening of democracy, rule of law and integration in Latin America. After his Master’s programme, his desire to continue building a career in international law and his interest for European affairs led him to the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in Geneva. There, he worked in the International Security and humanitarian department. Lately, He was working as a junior legal fellow in the Directorate for External Relations of the Legal Service at the Council of the European Union where he was assisting in research on foreign policy issues, sanctions’ cases as well as providing legal support to senior lawyers in case preparations before the Court of Justice of the EU. Furthermore, he took part in the Graduate Study Programme of the United Nations as well he graduated in National Defense from the High Centre for National Defense Studies of Spain (CESEDEN). Finally, Joel has also presented at different conferences about EU foreign affairs and is author of several articles in this field.

Since October 2018, he is PhD candidate under the supervision of Professor Christine Kaddous at the Centre d’études juridiques européennes.
